Aguilar draws challenger in race for Place 3 on City Council

Two local school districts, city accepting candidate applications for May elections

A race has developed for Place 3 on the Sulphur Springs City Council, one of three seats on the May 4 Election ballot.

Candidate filing for trustees elections is also under way for two local school districts as well.

Sulphur Springs City Council

Collyn Seth McDaniel filed candidacy last week for Place 3 on Sulphur Springs City Council. Incumbent Oscar Aguilar Monday filed candidacy, seeking another term as Place 3 Councilman.

As of Monday afternoon, the incumbents were the only candidate who had filed candidacy for Places 1 and 2 . Jay W. Julian is seeking another term as Place 1 Councilman and Harold Nash is seeking another term as the Place 2 Councilman.

Candidate filing for Places 1-3 on Sulphur Springs City Council will continue from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday- Friday through Feb. 17 at Sulphur Springs Municipal Building, 201 North Davis St Applications for a place on the ballot may be mailed to 125 South Davis St, or emailed to natalie@sulphurspringstx.org.

Sulphur Springs ISD Board of Trustees

Sulphur Springs ISD and Yantis ISD are also accepting applications for candidacy as trustees in each respective district's May 4 school board elections.

Sulphur Springs currenlty has two at-large places on the board of trustees. Currently, Jason Dietze and Kerry Wright are serving in those seats.

Candidate filing will continue from 8 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fridays through Feb. 16. Completed applications must be returned to the Tax Office inside Sulphur Springs ISD Adminstration Building, 631 Connally St.

SSISD is also expected to have a bond package on the May 4 ballot.

The SSISD Bond Planning Committee, tasked with assessing the needs and making proposals for district faciltiies improvements, Monday night, Jan. 22, updated the school board on their findings. The committee recommended that the school board call for a bond election at the next school board meeting, to allow the voters to determine whether to pass a largbond package which would encompass all of the major repairs recommended at one time.

Yantis ISD Board of Trustees

Candidate filing for the three at-large seats on YISD boar of trustees continues from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday-Friday through Feb. 16 at YISD, 105 W. Oak St. in Yantis. Completed applications may also be mailed to the same address or submitted via email to jrodriquez@yantisisd.net, or faxes to 903-383-7620.
