Dutton, Money headed to run-off for HD 2 seat

In the Nov. 7 election for Texas District 2, none of the candidates received 50% or more of the votes cast, necessitating a runoff election next month to determine which of the two candidates receiving the most votes will serve the unexpired term.

The special election for House District 2 was called to fill the unexpired term of Bryan Slaton. The ballot featured five Republican candidates — Jill Dutton, Heath Hyde, Brent Money, Doug Roszhart and Krista Schild — and one Democratic candidate, Kristen Washington. When all 55 polling precincts from the three counties in HD 2 had reported in Tuesday night, Money and Dutton led.

Overall, Money received 31.75% or 8,965 of the 28,237 ballots cast in the three counties in the HD 2 election on Nov. 7, according to the unofficial results reported Tuesday night by Texas Secretary of State's Office. Money carried Hunt County, recieving 4,742 of 13,136 ballots cast in that county.

Jill Dutton received 25.26% (7,132 votes) of ballots cast Tuesday, with 3,360 of those cast by Van Zandt voters.

Behind Dutton with 21.48% (6,065 votes) of the ballots cast was Heath Hyde, followed by Washington who garnered 11.18% of votes, then Roszhart with 7.8% and Schild 2.53%.

Hyde did carry his home county of Hopkins, receiving a total of 3,130 of the 5,703 ballots cast in the HD 2 election in Hopkins. He received a total of 6,065 votes across all three counties in HD 2. Hyde actually was in second place in early voting numbers; Money had 3,662 votes during early voting and Hyde received 2,753 of ballots cast during early voting, which ended on Nov. 3. Schild's biggest support came from Hunt County, where she received 486 votes. Washington's biggest support came from Hunt County, where she garnered 1,986 votes. Roszhart's biggest support came fromHunt County, where 1,751 people cast ballots for him.

Overall, 21.56% of the 130,978 registered voters in cast ballots in the three-county area. Hopkins and Van Zandt counties had the largest voting percentages in the three counties; 23.81% of registered voters cast ballots in the Nov. 7 HD election, with Hopkins in a close second with 23.35% of registered voters casting ballots, with Hunt in third with only 19.58% of the total registered voters casting ballots in either early or Election Day voting.
