Woman accused of assaulting jailer while in custody in Hopkins County

Alyssa Renee Cockrum allegedly assaulted a corrections officer at Hopkins County jail, where she was in custody for burglary of a vehicle and controlled substance charges, according to police and sheriff 's reports.

Deputies at 1:25 a.m. Monday, Nov. 20, responded in the jail where a person was reported to be actively fighting.

When Deputy Brennan Murray arrived, he noted jailers were attempting to detain Cockrum, but she had started refusing further processing. She then allegedly started swinging, striking a uniformed jail guard twice on the face with a closed fist, causing the guard pain.

The 24-year-old was then charged with assault on a public servant, a third-degree felony offense.

Cockrum was jailed overnight Saturday by Sulphur Springs Police.

Officers first responded at 10:55 p.m. Saturday, to a complaint of a female fulling on vehicle door handles on West Industrial Drive.

Upon arrival, police reported finding a woman, sitting in a blue-green Mazda 3 that didn’t belong to her. She reportedly verbally identified herself incorrectly to officers who knew her correct ID information, 24-year-old Alyssa Renee Cockrum of Sulphur Springs.

Sulphur Springs Police Officer C. Jones took Cockrum into custody at 11:36 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 18, and tranpsorted her to jail on the misdemeanor charges of burglary of a vehicle and failure to identify.

Upon arrival at the county jail, however, correctional officers reported finding a clear bag with a white crystal-like substance suspected to be methamphetamine in her possession. The suspected contraband weighed appoximately 6.6 grams, including packaging.

Consequently, Cockrum was also charged at 12:39 a.m. Sunday with possession of a controlled substance, according to arrest reports.

Cockrum remained in Hopkins County jail Tuesday on all four charges.
