Early voting begins April 22 for two school bond elections, at least one city council election

At least three elections will be conducted in Hopkins County on May 4, school bond elections for Sulphur Bluff and Sulphur Springs school districts, and Sulphur Springs City Council.

Sulphur Bluff ISD

Sulphur Bluff ISD has called for an election on May 4. District voters are asked to vote either for or against the proposed $6 million bond for construction, renovation, impromewent acquisition and eqeuipment of school buildings, as well as any necessary sites for these items, and to purchase new school buses. If approved, the debt portion of the school tax rate (the I&S rate) would go up $0.15 to $0.22 per $100 property valueation. That would increase the overall tax rate to $1.0055 per $100 prpoerty valuation.

Early voting in the SBISD proposed bond election will be conducted from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 22-30 in Sulphur Bluff ISD Adminstration Office, 1027 County Road 3550. Election Day voting will be from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. May 4 in SBISD gymnasium foyer.

Sulphur Springs City Council

The City of Sulphur Springs had three places up for election this spring. All three incumbents filed candidacy, seeking reelection. Only Place 3 Councilman Oscar Aguilar drew an opponent. Seth McDaniel is challenging Aguilar for the Place 3 seat on Sulphur Springs City Council. Place 1 Councilman Jay Julian and Place 2 Councilman Harold Nash Sr. will serve another term on the council, as they were the only candidate to sign up for their respective seats.

While Julian and Nash's name are on the ballot, the seats will go to the pair who have no opponents. Voters will be asked to select either challenger Seth McDaniel or incumbent Oscar Aguilar.

Early voting will be conducted from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 22, 24, 26-30, at Sulphur Springs Municipal Building (City Hall), 201 North Davis St. Voting hours will be extended from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. April 23 and 25. The election will follow May 4, and be conducted from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. inside the muncipal buidling.

Suphur Springs ISD

Sulphur Springs ISD was scheduled to hold a trustees election for two at-large seats on the school board. However, only two residents, Kati Adair and Brian Kelly, filed candidacy in the election, thus, the seats will automatically go to Adair and Kelly. That would have allowed the districts to cancel that election.

SSISD Board of Trustees in February, however, called for an election for voters to cast ballots for or against a $157,150,000 bond election, which would fund two new elemetnary schools; renovations. expansion and udpating at Barbara Bush Primary, Bowie Primary and Douglass Primary campuses; purchase of land wintin SSID's boundary on which to construct the second new elemetnary campus; one of the campuses would be called Rowena Johnson Elementary. If approved, the old SSES building would be torn down; Travis and the current Johnson Primary would be sold. The bonds would be paid for through a school tax increase of one-fourth of a cent ($0.001), according to information from the school ditsrict.

Early voting etiher for or against the proopsed $157.15 milliion SSISD bond will be conducted from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 22-26 and April 29-30, at SSISD Administration Building, 631 Connally St. Voting on Election Day will be conducted from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. May 4, in the SSISD Administration Building.
