On Sunday, May 29th, the Sulphur Springs Center for Dance held their annual recital at the Sulphur Springs Civic Center. The venue was packed to capacity with parents, friends, family, and community leaders as students from age two through eighteen performed.

This year’s theme, “Welcome to the Big Top,” was lighter hearted than recent year’s performances and allowed for the fun of interesting costuming. This was illustrated with a prominent use of clown and animal motifs. Each dance style was featured throughout the evening: jazz, tap, ballet, and hip hop. There was also a special performance by the SSCD Cheer team to kick off the resumption of acThe performance featured several stand out performances. Each of Robyn Russell, Harley Speed, and Jaslyn Galvan performed moving solos, all of them seniors and performing in their last recital. Each age group and performance level excelled.

However, as is usually the case, some of the highlight performances came from the more experienced dancers. “Black Magic,” “Dolls,” and “Get Outta Your Mind” were each moving in their own right. The dance directly before intermission, “Sweet Dreams,” was both moving, artistic, and incredibly athletic. Featuring a multitude of dancers, various sizes and ages, and heavily reliant on shadow play, it was a highlight.
