Lady Eagles fall against Muenster, 46-25

Monk leads with 13 points

BONHAM — The Como-Pickton Lady Eagles had their season come to a screeching halt Friday, falling 46-25 to the No. 16 Muenster Lady Hornets in their Area playoff game at Bonham High School. Throughout the game, the Lady Eagles were kept off balance and couldn’t establish any rhythm, as the Lady Hornets ended their season.

The first quarter saw the Lady Eagles jump out to fast start after Addi Monk made a pair of two-pointers, giving them a 4-0 lead. From there, the Lady Hornets responded with a trio of free throws, a three-pointer, and a two-pointer, pulling ahead 8-4.

The Lady Eagles would trim the score to 8-6 after Monk made a pair of free throws. The Lady Hornets closed out the first quarter with a pair of two-pointers, extending their lead to 126.

Late in the first quarter, the Lady Eagles were dealt a blow when Maggie Brown suffered a knee injury. She subsequently didn’t return to the game.

The second quarter began with Monk making a two-pointer. Following a Lady Hornets two-pointer, Kati Calvillo drilled a three-pointer, trimming the score to 14-11.

From there, the Lady Hornets went on a tear. They would first score on a two-pointer and three-pointer, extending their lead to 19-11. Soon after, the Lady Hornets added another two-pointer and three-pointer, increasing their lead to 24-11.

The Lady Eagles scored again when Bella Romero sank a three-pointer. Muenster made another three-pointer before the quarter ended, bringing their lead to 27-14 going into halftime.

Coming out of the break, the Lady Eagles opened the third quarter with a two-pointer by Romero. Following a Lady Hornets free throw, Cali Morris sank a three-pointer, trimming the score to 28-19.

The Lady Hornets then made a three-pointer, raising the score to 31-19. After Monk made a free throw, the Lady Hornets added two free throws, making the score 33-20.

Monk then made another pair of free throws. After that, the Lady Hornets made two more free throws to close out the third quarter, extending their lead to 35-22.

The fourth quarter started with a Muenster three-pointer, making the score 38-22. A two-pointer by Monk cut the score to 38-24.

From there, the Lady Hornets would dominate on defense and added three more two-pointers on offense, increasing their lead to 44-24.

After Shyann Wetzel made a free throw, Muenster closed out the game with a two-pointer, defeating the Lady Eagles 46-25.

Monk finished as the Lady Eagles’ leading scorer with 13 points, also tallying six rebounds, one assist, one block, and one steal. Romero was second with five points, also tallying one rebound and one steal.

Calvillo would finish with three points, also tallying two rebounds and one deflection. Morris also scored three points, adding three assists, two rebounds, and two deflections Shyann Wetzel rounded out the scoring with one point, adding one rebound and one assist. Other contributors include Brown and Sadie Wetzel with one rebound and one assist each, and Saylor Smith with one deflection.

With the loss, the Lady Eagles’ season has come to an end. They finished with an overall record of 19-14, also finishing as Bi-District champions and Area finalists.

This would also be the last high school basketball game for two senior Lady Eagles: Monk and Morris.

The Lady Eagles will look to improve in the off-season and make a deeper playoff run next year.
